Connections Guide
Connecting Flights at JFK
JFK has multiple terminals, so you may arrive at one terminal and depart from another. Please budget additional travel time as you will need to go through the TSA screening process again. All terminals are connected by AirTrain, which you can take for free between terminals. Be sure to check your airline app or in-terminal monitors for your next gate.
- If you are arriving internationally and connecting to a U.S. flight, U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires you to go through immigration, collect your baggage, recheck it, and pass through security again.
- If you booked separate tickets, you may be required to complete full arrival procedures. That includes claiming checked bags, and then checking-in and dropping your bags with the connecting airline.

AirTrain is free for trips between terminals
Get to your connecting flight on AirTrain
The AirTrain connects all passenger terminals at JFK Airport. If your connecting flight departs from a different terminal, use the AirTrain to get to your next terminal. The AirTrain is free for trips between terminals.
- Check whether your connecting flight departs from the same terminal you are arriving at. Many airlines codeshare connecting flights. Make sure you check the terminal of the operating carrier. For example, if you booked through Finnair but your flight is operated by American Airlines, you’ll need to go to the American Airlines terminal.
- If you need to change terminals, follow airport signs to the AirTrain and to your next terminal.
- Once you get to your departure terminal, you will need to go through TSA security screening again.
If you are arriving on an international flight:
- Collect your checked bags at baggage claim, even if they are tagged to your final destination.
- Deposit your bags at the baggage recheck facility before heading to your next flight.
Traveling through Terminal 4
Delta offers a free shuttle bus between concourses within Terminal 4 to minimize walking distances. You will not need to go through TSA security again.
Note that the shuttle is not necessarily a faster option than walking.
